PROJECTS

The projects that were carried out so far are for both the institutions in Chennai (Madras) with the homes for boys and girls
as well as an oratory. The children attend their respective schools in the urban districts. For Zion Home in Surutupalli
(Andhra Pradesh), about 2 hours drive from Chennai, the children have around 50,000 m2 of living quarters, a kindergarten,
a primary school, three workshops, an out-patient hospital ward (also for patients that do not live in the home) and an oratory.
In this area, only the large projects are mentioned.

__

Continuous smaller renovations, repairs (from typhoon damages) and small purchases like inventory, playground equipment,
vehicles and the yearly clothing purchases for 300 children aren’t mentioned explicitly here.

1994

A first step was the hygiene improvement with the help of a toilet system at Zion Home, which was very important due to
the pneumonic plague which was going around in India at the time.

__

1995

The large donation of November 1994 made it possible to build a long-wanted and needed well system near the river.
This eliminated the need to bring water literally bucketwise from the nearest village to the 150 children, of which 80%
were below the age of 10.

__

1996

Planting a new fruit plantation, including fences, with 500 mango trees, 100 coconut palm trees, 50 teak trees and an
around 5000 m² vegetable garden with tomatoes, beans, eggplants and lentils. In addition two houses for the
gardeners were built. Complete renovation of the Hemalata living quarters in Madras and a complete overhaul of the
children’s quarters. Construction of a toilet system for the patients of the clinic in Zion Home, including water tap system.

__ __ __

1997
Completion of some of the projects of the previous year. Construction of a toilet system and wash rooms for 240 children in Madras.

1998 – 1999
Construction of a training center for typing and sewing by adding a level to the school building, creating around 120 m²
of education space. By 2002/2003 all places are filled by 35 trainees that learn to type on 13 typewriters in shifts
(English, Telegu and Tamil) and 25 girls that learn to become a seamstress in an 18-month training program using
12 sewing machines. The free spaces were taken up by children from surrounding villages. This filled a hole in this
poor region, which is also an important aspect in times of an increasingly fundamentalist course in India.

1999 – 2000
A delivery vehicle was acquired because cheap groceries need to be brought from Madras to the Zion Home twice a week.
A kindergarten is set up at Zion Home. The roads between the buildings at Zion Home are made monsoon-proof by implementing
a sewage system. In both homes, some sport facilities are set up including table tennis, volleyball, soccer and basketball and
playground equipment like a sandbox, slide and swing. All 700 trees on the plantation on the side of a hill received water retentions
basins to collect water from the monsoon.

2001
The Zion Home school is supplied with school benches. Previously, the 100 children sat on the floor, causing postural deformities.
These are the first school benches near and far and set an example.

2002
Initiation of the new work shop for training welders and lath operators. The work shop educates trainees in a half-year basic
course program.

2003
Purchase of additional work benches and machines for the work shop initiated in 2002. The training of welder and lath operator is added.
Three additional sewing machines are bought to double the training capacity. A deep well (2.4 meters wide and 30 meters deep) is built
in the river bed with a vertical pump using the most modern technique. It has around 1000 meters of pipes running up the hill to a
30,000 liter water container at the highest point of the plantation. This ensures that the people, animals and plants have sufficient water
supply, also during the dry season.

2004
Generators are bought to overcome the daily power shut downs at Zion.
General overhaul of the toilet facilities at Zion.

2006
Construction of two huts at the plantation at Zion.
• Purchase of sports equipment for cricket, volleyball and basketball at Webbs.
• Construction of three bathrooms and toilet facilities with 30 cabins at Webbs.

2007
The making of a professional 30-minute film titled „The Hemalata orphanages in South-India and the daily life of the children”
including a German explanation. Interested parties can borrow the film from the Castelhun family.

2008 – 2009
Construction of a work shop for 25 electronics craftsmen, funded by „Sternstunde“. Set up of two PC-shops (in Madras and at Zion)
for a basic IT-training. The 12 PC all have Internet access. The electronics work shop is fully equipped, also to complete outside
orders by students (learning by doing).
